Every day I work with someone wanting to make honest changes in their health and are continually lead down the rabbit hole of mass media marketing and stupid loop holes.
What blows my mind is that companies are allowed to brand and market a product like the following:
Sounds so good right?..... Well here is the ugly truth:
The ingredient list:
Water (eau), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polyquaternium-10, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Acrylates Copolymer, Yellow 6, Yellow 10, Parfum
Just to break down some of these "gentle" "hypoallergenic" ingredients:
Cocamidopropyl Betaine: a synthetic surfactant; it has been associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, reactions that could be due to the ingredient itself or to impurities present in it, such as 3-dimethylaminopropylamine. - Skindeep
PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate: Human skin toxicant or allergen. Function(s): Fragrance Ingredient; Surfactant - Cleansing Agent; Surfactant - Solubilizing Agent; EMULSIFYING- linked to cancer
Phenoxyethanol: preservative, known irritant
Sodium Benzoate: preservative, needs better manufacturing restrictions, linked toxic or harmful side effects.
POLYQUATERNIUM-10: synthetic polymeric - literally FILM FORMING
Sodium Hydroxide is a highly caustic and reactive inorganic base
FD&C YELLOW 6- synthetic dye produced from petroleum
"Parfum: Any mixture of fragrance ingredients used in a variety of cosmetics. Some fragrance ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma. Some linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. Some harmful to fish and other wildlife." - David Suzuki
SO what is an alternative?!
Here is just one an example of a safer option: 100% Pure baby shampoo.
For some people there still might be ingredients they aren't sure of, but for the most part these makes sense. They use all natural, food grade ingredients with as many certified organics as possible, skipping the cheaper toxic chemicals. This wash has only 11 simple ingredients from organic aloe juice to chamomile with a touch or essential orange and vanilla oils.
And honestly, who knows?! One day some of these ingredients might turn out to be worse than we thought, after all, we are the guinea pigs.
For me personally, I would rather risk the side effects of these ingredients than the ones from my last post.
But again it's my personal opinion.
